Flag History and Meaning: Designed in 1924 by Louis Greenstein, Buffalo’s city flag was created to express pride and love for the City of Light. The thirteen stars represent New York’s place as one of the original thirteen colonies of the United States. Thirteen lightning bolts echo that symbolism while also nodding to Buffalo’s legacy as one of the first American cities to adopt widespread electric power. At the center, the city seal features a lighthouse and boats, which is a tribute to the Erie Canal and Buffalo’s historic role as a key trade and transportation hub in the early development of the nation.
