Designed by Eric Hart, the Flag of Syracuse, New York is named "First Light." It was adopted by the Syracuse Common Council on June 20, 2023. The previous flag was designed in 1915 with the city seal on a white field, with two light-blue bars above and below.
Features of the new design symbolize:
- Location of the star in the center represents the location of the city in central New York
- Six point star = the six nations of the Haudenosaunee in addition to Syracuse’s six historical names.
- Orange of the Star = the rising sun
- White triangle = salt/snow of Upstate New York
- Blue Triangles = hills of the Onondaga. The word onoñda’gega’ means, “people of the hills” in the Onondaga language. The space between the triangles is the Onondaga Valley.
